The  TT2 C5 Corvette of Team Mustang Sampling Racing, driven by Mark Nunnally and Tal Isbell, took second in TT2 on Saturday and the win on Sunday.

Looking at the forecast and quickly pulling their driver cooling gear out of winter storage, 26 Time Trial drivers made the trek to Roebling Road Raceway just outside of Savannah, Ga., for the 2026 NASA Southeast season kickoff. With Saturday temperatures topping out just north of 80 degrees, the conditions were almost perfect for experienced drivers and rookies alike to begin the year-long quest for a season championship.

The short offseason saw some of the biggest changes in recent years to the Time Trial and Super Touring rules, so drivers were eager to get on track and start gathering data on the effects of those changes to their lap times.

At the same time, newly minted and prospective TT drivers Erik Vogel and Oscar Kwong began their quest for a full NASA Time Trial license while competing on a provisional license for the weekend, who we are happy to report drove cleanly and safely during all competition sessions through the weekend to earn their full NASA TT license. Job well done, Erik and Oscar!

During Saturday’s competition, Andrew Henry, in his No. 17 TT3 Chevrolet Corvette broke the existing TT3 track record at Roebling Road with a blistering lap time of 1:13.973. Apparently, that just wasn’t good enough for Andrew because after clearing the scrutiny of a post record lap impound, his lap record held for all of 2 hours when he went out the very next TT session and broke his own record with a lap of 1:13.624.

Team Mustang Sampling Racing's No. 531 Chevrolet Corvette competing in the TT2 class at Roebling Road Raceway.

Not one to ever stop and proudly reflect on his accomplishments, Henry  broke his own track record for a third time on Sunday with a lap time of 1:13.204. We suspect that had there been a third day of competition, and he had another set of the Hoosier Track Attack Pro tires he was using, Andrew would have continued beating his own record. Congratulations, Andrew!

Saturday Competition

On Saturday, the rest of the TT field of drivers got a crash course back to their days in the NASA HPDE program and specifically, the expectations on drivers when a red flag comes out during a competition session. The difference was that unlike in an HPDE3 session when a red flag is almost always thrown as a practice drill to familiarize drivers with the process, two red flags occurred during competition that were very real for a vehicle on its roof, and another vehicle that pulled off on the outside of the track surface due to a catastrophic mechanical fire that quickly spread.

We are happy to report that both drivers walked away without significant injuries. For the rest of the field of TT drivers, it served as a reminder of the importance of their situational awareness when on track, but also that while safety and fire protection gear are optional in Time Trial outside of a helmet, there is no price too high to ensure you can exponentially increase your odds of avoiding serious injury by investing in safety gear.
