A large pack of Spec Miata race cars navigates a corner bumper-to-bumper during a NASA NorCal race at Sonoma Raceway, showcasing the series' close competition.

Sonoma Raceway roared to life as the Spec Miatas hit the track for a three-race thriller in late June under the California sun. With more bumper to bumper action than Bay Area traffic, the racers delivered fast and controlled wheel-to-wheel insanity across every corner of the 2.52-mile circuit.

From the drop of the green flag in Saturday’s race one, it was a full-on Spec Miata mad dash. Team RA Motorsports led the charge with a fast lap time of 1:55.120, holding off Teen Mazda Challenge driver Nathaniel Spitz and Wyatt Couch in a nose-to-tail scrap. Less than 2 seconds separated the top 10, proving once again that Spec Miata provides the closest racing and bang-for-your-buck action in motorsports.

The podium winners of Saturday's Spec Miata race—Team RA Motorsports, Nathaniel Spitz, and Wyatt Couch—pose with their trophies in front of the Sonoma Raceway Wall of Fame.

Sunday morning’s race two brought even tighter margins. Matteo Sunseri emerged victorious with a blistering lap of 1:54.765, barely fending off Team RA Motorsports and Wyatt Couch, who refused to let Sunseri breathe for more than a corner. The front nine finished with lap times within 1 second of each other.

Behind them, TMC driver Lincoln Larson, Nathaniel Spitz and Team LaBouff Racing staged their own battle royale, swapping positions like it was a kart track. All this action led to a nail-biting Sunday race three.

Sunday's Spec Miata race two winners, Matteo Sunseri, Team RA Motorsports, and Wyatt Couch, stand together on the podium with their first, second, and third-place trophies at Sonoma Raceway.

With contingency prize money, pride, and season points on the line, the final race of the weekend turned up the heat even more. Couch, Sunseri, and Spitz again found themselves locked in battle, putting on a clinic in clean aggression. Couch laid down a best time of 1:55.426 and snatched the win, with the top 10 finishing in a Miata-shaped blur. Finishing fourth, Lincoln Larson scored the fast lap of the race at 1:55.123, which should be good enough for the lap record at Sonoma.

Whether you were in the pits, on the wall, or behind the wheel, this was Spec Miata at its finest. NASA NorCal will be taking the summer break and then return to action in September. See you next round!
