Darin Mock drafted multi-time Spec Iron champion Robert Miller on the back straight at Road Atlanta in December and took the win and the championship on a last-lap pass.

The final round of the NASA Southeast Spec Iron 2021 season championship took place Dec 4-5 at Road Atlanta. The class championship was close and would be decided by this double-points event between veteran and past champion Robert Miller and the up-and-coming hot shoe Darin Mock in only his second full year of racing in Spec Iron. Mild weather made for some fast, close and exciting racing, and provided comfortable temps for the spectators as well.

Even though Miller had the fast lap in qualifying, Mock was right with him on the outside of the front row with only .4 seconds difference in their qualifying times. At the drop of the green flag, Mock was able to get a jump at the start and get out front. However, within two laps, the veteran Miller was able to get back around Mock for the lead with Mock hot on his heels.

As the race progressed, Miller was able to gain a healthy lead and it appeared it was going to be yet another championship run for him. Unfortunately for Miller, Mock was not going to give up that easily! As the race continued and traffic became more of an issue, Mock was able to catch up to Miller to set up a close and exciting run for the checkered!

With only a few laps left, Mock made his move on the back straightaway and using a drafting move was able to slingshot around Miller. From there he was able to hold off Miller for the win and 2021 Championship! Cale Phillips was also able to get around Miller to secure second place as Miller’s tires were going away by the end of the race. Miller would finish third.

After the checkered was thrown, the following is the 2021 NASA Southeast Spec Iron champion and finalists. Congratulations to all!
