NASA's new American Iron National Director Bob Collins.

NASA Great Lakes racer Bob Collins has just been named as the new National Director for American Iron. Also part of his duties will be leadership of American Iron Extreme and Spec Iron. Collins takes the reins from Al Watson, who had  been the American Iron National Director since 2015.

“I feel privileged to have served as national director of American Iron for as long as I did, and I’m proud of the things we accomplished. It’s a great race series, ” Watson said. “Of course, I’ll be around to help Bob and to ensure a smooth transition, and I look forward to seeing him help the series grow and prosper.”

Collins first joined NASA in 2015 and earned his competition license in 2018. Collins is already up to speed and will be competing and directing compliance with NASA National Tech Director Hank Padilla at the 2023 NASA Championships.

“I want to thank Al for his years of leadership as the National American Iron Series Director,” Collins said. “It is an honor to be selected as Al’s replacement. My plan is to grow the Iron Series while also listening to existing Iron Series racers concerns by working together with the regional series leaders. I look forward to sharing with potential future racers the camaraderie that fellow Iron racers enjoy in helping each other have successful and competitive race weekends!”

Racers with suggestions for improvements and rule changes for the 2024 season should direct them to Collins, who is listed on the NASA staff directory.
