Realizing he needed more power, NASA Arizona Super Touring racer Tyler Hinz undertook a winter project that would give him the additional grunt he needed. Apparently, it worked, which is evident in this week’s NASA Racing Gear Store Move of the Month.

Hinz removed the original K24 that came in his 2006 Acura TSX, with an average horsepower around 208. In its place he installed a J37 V6 out of an Acura RL. With a subframe from a V6 Honda Accord, some bolt-ons, including an intake, header and exhaust, and a tune, he increased power output to roughly 294 horsepower.

It was all going well until the power wire going to the PDM from the kill switch was loose. The car was cutting out, the dash was turning off and he wasn’t sure what was going on with the car, so he decided to bring it in, which would not be good for his starting position come race time. Luckily, he found the problem and got it repaired in time.

“I started P4 out of five, I think, in the race in ST4. And then as soon as the green flag dropped, I mean, I was just kind of away from there. The car on the straightaway is carrying ST3 speeds,” Hinz said. “But it was a good start. I was kind of caught off guard by the green because I got brake checked a little bit and started at 2,000 rpm. But yeah, I passed everybody in ST4 before even the start finish line. Then had a little bit of a battle with David in the yellow 350Z again.”

Hinz picked up two wins that weekend at Podium Club at Attesa. He has some work to do on his aerodynamics this season to help increase cornering speeds, but the winter project appears to have paid off.
