When you look at the outline of the New Jersey Motorsports Park’s Lightning course, you might suspect the track designer penned it as a surprise to ownership. It resembles a … well, never mind.

The Lightning course also had a surprise at the NASA Northeast October event for Spec Miata racer Derek Levine, who crested the hill at the exit of Turn 1 only to find a few things in his way.

After qualifying eighth out of 12 due to flat spotting a tire in qualifying, Levine started from the fourth row, and had worked his way up to fifth when he got the surprise. Just as the corner worker was ripping out a waving yellow flag, Levine darted through the narrow opening between traffic and the spun car. It all happened in an instant.

“About three-quarters of the way through the race, I was in fifth. As I approached Turn 1, I saw a cloud of dust over the turn (the exit of the turn is blind) and entered cautiously,” Levine said. “My view was obstructed by the car ahead of me, but once he moved to avoid it, I saw the hazard. After getting through, I was in third and would eventually finish in second.”

Nice reflexes, Derek.
