Turns 13 and 14 on the full course at VIR form a gauntlet at the end of the long back straightaway. It’s tricky to get through there after carrying all that speed, but in this iteration of the NASA Racing Gear Store Move of the Month, NASA Mid-Atlantic Spec3 competitors found a way to funnel four cars through it with little space between them.
On the first lap of the third race at Hyperfest at VIR with a 16-car Spec3 field, the first perspective is from Ross Shull’s car. The camera view then switches to Andy Schmidt’s car, and then to Taylor Johnson’s. Schmidt gets around Johnson to take the inside into 13, and has enough juice to get by Sean O’Hara, who led the group out of Oak Tree. Schmidt picked up two positions in one corner!
“The top six cars had been running close together all weekend, and passes must be earned in spec racing,” Schmidt said. “So, when an opportunity presented itself to kill two birds with one stone, I had to take it.”
The pass took Schmidt from fifth to third, which was where he finished. Nice work.
