In the NASA Great Lakes season opener at National Corvette Museum Motorsports Park, Spec Iron racer Jeff Wood held the early advantage. A multi-car encounter involving a slower-moving out-of-class vehicle created the opening of the weekend for Robin Burnett, who capitalized on the chaos to leapfrog from third to first in a single maneuver.
Burnett chose a path and sliced through the field of a Ferrari, BMWs and Fords and was able slip inside Wood between turns 17 and 18 and hold the position till the end.
“I went from third to first in the middle of a straightaway while passing two competitors and a Ferrari,” Burnett said. “He [Wood] really had control. He needed just a hundred more yards.”
This week’s NASA Racing Gear Store Move of the Month allowed Burnett to take the win, finishing just .064 seconds ahead of Wood, who won the other two Spec Iron races that weekend.
In Saturday’s race one, Robin Burnett took first, with Wood .064 seconds behind in second, Cody Powell in third, Jeff Nevi in fourth and Jason Scott in fifth. Heck of a way to open the season.
