On the MyLaps scoreboard after each race, what most people would call the hard charger gets a little rabbit next to his or her name for advancing the greatest number of positions during the race. You could call it a badge of honor.

NASA Arizona Spec Miata racer Jeremy Nechiporenko started from 16th at a race at Inde Motorsports Ranch in Willcox, Ariz., due to a mistake in the qualifying race that put him at the rear of the field. Nechiporenko had been working his way forward throughout the race despite third gear giving him trouble, which you can see in the video.

Nechiporenko advanced to ninth by the last lap of the race, and was chasing down the car in front of him, driven by Steve Odart. Could he pass him by the Start/Finish line? Nechiporenko sprinted toward the line with Odart just ahead. By the time the two of them reached the Start/Finish line, Nechiporenko had edged past Odart  at the finish by .001 seconds!

Oh, and then he went off track. A bit.

“I believe our official times were 30:18.353 and 30:18:354. I was in full send mode and hadn’t thought through the consequences of us both being inside since the finish line is at an angle, and I couldn’t hold the turn to stay on track after the finish line,” Nechiporenko said. “However, it was worth it to me as I earned our “Track Rabbit” award for hard charger going from 16th to 8th. It was an incredible weekend at a great track and I can’t wait to go back to it.”
