NASA Northeast Spec E46 racer Ray Buchanan broke some wheel studs during the Saturday points race, so he started at the back for Sunday morning’s qualifying race.

Buchanan picked up a couple of positions, but a driving error coming out of the “Octopus” on New Jersey Motorsports Park’s Thunderbolt course left him vulnerable to competitor Steve Jin, who was on his bumper as the two drivers hit the front straight.

By the time the two drivers had made it to Turn 1, they were side by side, which is how they remained for the next four corners, when Buchanan was able to get ahead exiting Turn 5.

“We were door to door until Turn 5 where I was able to defend my position,” Buchanan said. “There was zero contact between us, just some good hard racing and a game of chicken into Turn 4. This put me in P2 when unfortunately we ended under a full course yellow.”

That’s spec class racing as it should be. Well done, gentlemen.
