NASA Northeast driver Dillon Brennan was giving a ride to a passenger in HPDE4 at New Jersey Motorsports Park’s Thunderbolt course, where he had to use some fast hands to avoid a spinning car just ahead in this installment of the NASA Racing Gear Store Move of the Month.
Brennan had left enough room for the Mustang to initiate the pass on the inside of Turn 1, which exits into an uphill section. As the Mustang crested the hill, the wheels spun and the back end came out from under it.
“I watched the rear of the car and listened, and when I heard the wheel speed increase without a throttle lift I knew the Mustang was either spinning right into the wall or the driver would try to correct and it’d snap left toward me,” Brennan said. “When I saw the weight transfer, I knew it was coming toward me so I veered left to keep me and my passenger safe.”
We get an added bonus in the form of a video from the car behind Brennan, who captures the whole incident ahead as it unfolds. The driver of the following car brakes hard enough to avoid the incident, then gets back under way, giving Brennan a huge thumbs up as he passes. Peer recognition at a time when he could really use it!
