George Smith kept himself and his car out of trouble to take first in STR1.

Utah Region’s Bob Evans started from pole, a position he clinched by one point of the total accumulated that week, besting George Smith. Driving a Corvette modified just enough to bump it from ST1 to STR1, Smith got a good jump at the start and led from flag to flag.

Brian Faessler’s crew worked hard to repair the broken ball joint and that subsequent damage from the day before to make the grid in the third spot. Faessler got by Evans to finish second, but was disqualified for a pass under double yellow.

Meanwhile, Smith focused on finding a spot in the field where he could keep his nose clean.

“Mainly, my challenge was to battle through the remaining ST1 and ST2 cars and get to a point where I could just driver the car, not make any mistakes and take care of the equipment,” Smith said. “That took about four laps.”

Evans, who fits his 7-foot-tall frame in an old Sprint Cup Car, brought it home in second place.

“I was just trying to stay out of the ST2 battle that was in front of me, and I knew the 18 car was already disqualified, so I just drove around,” he said. “When the ST2 guys were going slower and slower, I decided to go up and give the 18 a run for his money, just to put an exclamation point on second place, but we had a little problem, a little issue back there trying to get around him, so I just backed off. I knew he was already disqualified.”
