Once again, the Outlaw Vintage class set the pace in the Thunder race at Roebling Road April 13 and 14, with Matt Isbell setting the fast lap with a 1:16.97 in his MTI Datsun 240Z. Fred Benedict qualified P2 in his highly modified V1 Porsche 914 and was hot on Matt’s bumper only a few tenths back.
In Saturday’s race Isbell jumped to an early lead. Benedict would close on Isbell in the corners and looked to have a shot at a pass until his front splitter came loose. Dropping back long enough to make sure everything was OK, he was able to keep going and still finished second overall while Matt won the Thunder race for the second straight event. With Benedict’s second place, it was a sweep of the top two spots for Outlaw Vintage racing. Afterward Benedict said he had seen enough of Isbell’s rear bumper, and that he would have that splitter issue resolved for the next event.
With Benedict out of Sunday’s race, Isbell qualified P1 once again and never looked back, Drew Ewing in his GTS3 BMW gave Isbell a good race of it, but the Outlaw Vintage Datsun was just too strong and Isbell won the Sunday Thunder race as well.
