Motorsports have always been a thrilling mix of speed, strategy, and technology. But when you add a geographic rivalry into the mix, the intensity reaches new heights. The NASA Northeast vs NASA Southeast Thunder at The Glen combined event at Watkins Glen didn’t disappoint!
The competition between the North and South transcends the racetrack. It’s a reflection of the regional cultures that shape the attitudes of the drivers and fans. This event sold out early and many who wanted to participate couldn’t join the fun.
The NASA Northeast vs NASA Southeast Thunder at The Glen was a multi-day event filled with fun and intense racing. Drivers from both regions took home their fair share of trophies. At the end of the weekend every driver went home with new friends and vowed to return again soon.
Legendary Moments
Many of the racers helped each other out to make sure everyone was able to compete despite various setbacks. The lines of Northeast vs Southeast were clearly blurred when it came to the weekend and drivers’ generosity. The track was fast and the weather was gorgeous. The Saturday night festivities were outstanding, owing to the warmth and friendliness of the Northeast staff and drivers. They truly welcomed the Southeast drivers with open arms full of adult beverages!
Intense Racing and Time Trial
Many of the drivers were on their best behavior and raced cleanly for the weekend. Mutual respect for every driver provided close and magical racing for all. Time Trial competitors filled the track while driving fast laps coming close to setting track records at the same time.
In the Lightning races, we saw Spec3 battles with Andreas Schmidt (Southeast) and Taylor Johnson (Northeast) as well as Spec Miata with Capers Zentmeyer (Southeast) vs John Salerno (Northeast). Throw in a little Jack Cobetto (Mid-Atlantic) vs Robert Grace (Northeast) vs Tyler Wrenn (Southeast) in SpecE30 and you have quite a mix as well. All in all it was a fairly clean weekend with lots of close racing.
In the Thunder Races we had Colin Swanger (Southeast) battle with Curt Wickett (Northeast) in GTS3. The Thunder races were unique and fast at the same time.
The Southeast gave away its famous “I was 7th” T-shirts to all of the drivers who came in seventh place in their series. The trophies and T-shirts were the highlights of the Saturday night party with a live band!
