NASA Southeast finished up the 2021 Season in December at Road Atlanta, where 20 Miatas took to the track in qualifying on Saturday morning. In the end, the front row was separated by just .033 seconds! Broderick Bauguess clinched pole position with a time of 1:44.300 while Raiden Nicol qualified in P2 with a time of 1:44.333. Rounding out the top five were Alex Berg in P3, Keith Williamson in P4, and Yan Dia in P5.
For the championship race, Spec E30s were gridded up front, followed by Spec Miatas in the second group, then 944 Specs and ST4s and ST5s at the back. After the green flag, Bauguess and Nicol ran one/two and slowly started pulling away from Berg, Williamson, and Dia. By lap three, out-of-class traffic started to make things interesting. The lead cars were held back some as the faster E30s became harder to pass. A full-course caution came out on lap six, bunching up the field and setting the stage for some busy racing ahead.
The race restarted on lap 10. Nicol missed the green flag, which allowed Williamson, Dia, and Berg to pass by him as they headed downhill towards Turn 12. This also brought Bauguess within striking distance of Williamson. Out-of-class traffic in Turn 7 allowed Williamson to get alongside Bauguess where the two duked it out until Turn 11 where Williamson finally took the lead. Behind them, on the last lap, Nicol closed in on Dia where he made a move to the inside of Turn 1 and claimed P3. Williamson continued to lead until the last few turns of the race where an out-of-class car caused Williamson to breathe ever so slightly in Turn 10, just enough to let Bauguess pounce to his inside. The two drag raced toward the finish line with Bauguess edging his way to the win by just .041 seconds! They were followed by Nicol in P3, Dia in P4, and Berg in P5.
This race wrapped up the Southeast season points solidifying Broderick Bauguess as the 2021 Spec Miata Champion. Keith Williamson finished in second place with Don Elvington finishing in third place. Congratulations to all!
