Ahead of the 2025 racing season, NASA is excited to announce a new National Series Director to lead and grow Spec Miata. NASA Northeast driver Jim Tramontano will be new National Series Director for Spec Miata, with former National Series Director Xavier Calderon taking a new role as lead advisor for technical compliance.
“With my kid being in those ‘prime stages’ of her life, I want to make sure I’m there as much as possible for her. I love racing, but I need to prioritize family,” Calderon said. “However, I won’t be far because I’ve dedicated so much of myself to this organization from a national and regional perspective. More importantly, I truly believe the value that NASA delivers to the racing community is a positive and enriching one to many lives.”
Tramontano has been a pivotal part of expansion in the Northeast Region, which has had an explosion of growth in the last several years. Spec Miata nearly tripled its car counts and even had its own run group at various tracks. Tramontano’s infectious personality, desire to bring people together, and overall demeanor make him the perfect advocate to champion the Spec Miata class nationally.
This change of the national team will allow Tramontano to focus on the needs of all the regions throughout the country by allowing him to work with NASA Regional Directors to show what has worked, ideas for the series leaders to implement, and be the positive influence for a class that continues to show strong numbers throughout the regions and at the NASA Championships.
“I’m honored to have been chosen to take on the great responsibility of stewarding what I believe is the best group in all of motor racing,” Tramontano said. “My goal is to continue doing what has made Spec Miata so successful for all these years and work to ensure its continued success for decades to come.
“So many NASA regions are racing with incredible fields of Spec Miatas. Each is growing and supporting their group in unique ways on and off the track. My first goal is to improve communication between Spec Miata groups across regions to find out what works best, so we can all learn from each other,” Tramontano said. “I have long argued that Spec Miata is a place to learn, compete, and have fun, regardless of your budget. It is no surprise that the pinnacle of our class has shaped our reputation as an “expensive budget class.” In reality, there are still opportunities to have great racing in Spec Miata, whatever your budget and personal goals may be.”
Jim and Xavier are both on my “Mount Rushmore” of genuinely incredible people I know from NASA and it’s a beautiful thing to see one pass the torch to the other. Jim has a seemingly unlimited amount of energy to do so much for so many. I don’t know how he does it!
It’s all in the pizza, unlimited pizza = unlimited energy, haha.
For real though, thanks for the kind words!
Excellent choices!!
