Toyo Tires® announced the new Proxes® R DOT competition tire at the 2023 PRI Show as an eventual replacement for the Proxes® RR, which has been the mainstay of NASA’s spec tire programs for roughly the last 10 years, including Spec Miata.

Some NASA classes will switch to the new Proxes® R next year, but Spec Miata will remain on the Toyo Proxes® RR for 2025. Toyo Tires has agreed to extend production of the Proxes® RR in size 205-50-15 for the 2025 season.

The Toyo Proxes RA1 will still be the rain tire for all Toyo-spec tire classes, and the generous Toyo contingency programs will continue through 2025 for Spec Miata, with a modest increase in payouts. The NASA contingencies page will be updated with 2025 figures in the near future.

NASA will use further testing, data and feedback from 2025 to evaluate a replacement for the Toyo Proxes RR as the prescribed tire for Spec Miata for 2026 and future years.

“The Toyo Proxes RR is a tire that NASA Spec Miata drivers know and love,” said NASA CEO Jeremy Croiset. “We’re happy to be able to keep Spec Miata on the RR for one more season, and grateful to Toyo for working with us to supply our competitors with the tires they need.”
