NASA Mid-Atlantic has announced that Aaron Johnson will be the new Mid-Atlantic Spec Miata series director beginning at the event at VIR August 17-18. A NASA member since 2010 and competition license holder since 2015, Johnson is the shop manager for All Aspects Motorsports, a full-service prep race-prep shop in Chesapeake, Va. As the newest regional series leader for Spec Miata, Johnson will work alongside Spec Miata National Director Xavier Calderon toward continued growth and camaraderie within the class.
“I initially started racing in PT, and I was looking for a bigger challenge,” Johnson said. “Obviously, Spec Miata has a really talented group of drivers, especially Mid-Atlantic. I was getting passed by them in my car, which should have been faster.”
So, he sold his PT car three years ago and bought a Spec Miata. Now, in 2019 Johnson takes over as series leader from Adam Oliver, who had been in that role for a few years. Johnson’s goal is to grow the fields to what they once were. Johnson acknowledged that the level of competition and the concentration of talented drivers in the Mid-Atlantic Region can potentially discourage new drivers, but he hopes that sharing data and video from the front runners with drivers from the second half the pack will help.
“I want my guys to have fun,” Johnson said. “More people on track is always more fun.”
