As the adage goes, you can’t win a race in the first turn, but many have been lost there. Spec E30 racer Steffen Thompson wisely chooses not to take part in the mayhem of Turn 1 during the last race of the season at Buttonwillow Raceway Park in Southern California. He backs off to a safe distance, lets others make their mistakes, steers clear of the melee, gets back on the gas — and picks up three spots in the process. Thompson went on to finish third. Maybe races can be won in the first turn?
