Proving that tracks can perilous places anywhere, this wild smart phone video from NASA Texas’ Jose Garcia shows a wheel and tire bouncing down the front straight after a hub failure on a Mazda RX-8, which you can see pull off and comes to a stop to drivers left as the wheel continues bouncing past the starter stand and down the front straight. Stay alert out there, people.

  1. Oh, gosh what a nightmare. To loose a wheel at speed is unsettling on its own but not to know where that projectile will/might land is just as concerning.
Reminds me of the dragster blower that took-out the tv camera operator many years ago.
Hub failure is hard to diagnose before catastrophe. However, remove those wheels more often and spin those hubs by hand. Lot of info at your fingertips. I JUST started that procedure myself.
